A QUESTION OF SECURITY

I feel as though there are so many people now a days who are concerned about privacy on the internet, but at the same time there are more people than ever who are displaying personal information about themselves on programs such as facebook and myspace. To me it seems very contradictory. People use these programs often to promote themselves as some sort of person or another, and post all sorts of private information... and I feel as though much of the same crowd also complains about privacy

There are many different categories of privacy on the internet, but it seems as though there are more programs out there that give out private information, than programs that protect peoples information. In my opinion, the internet is a place where people display much information about themselves, and if one does not want to do this they should not have an account such as facebook or myspace.

Adam, the problem is not using the internet, but making sure you use the right things, there is a always a time and place to put your information out to the world and that is what people must understand. Some people might be careless, but its no excuse for websites to sell information about you

I completely agree about people displaying too much information without even attempting to hide it. You can constantly find friends on Facebook who give out their cell phone numbers, AIM screen name, and even where they live. I'm not anywhere near being paranoid about giving information via the internet but I am not the type of person to give out my room number and cell number.

Many websites allow payment by paypal which provides more security than giving your information to every site you buy from. However, many people do not attempt to understand paypal and sign up for a free account and instead risk it on different vendor's websites.

In order to protect yourself on the internet, you just have to be smart, read privacy policies, and not be careless.

Adam, I agree with many of the points you point out here. However, I don't agree with your statement that if people don't want to have their private information published, they shouldn't have Facebook or MySpace. I think these things inherantly don't give out private information. Like you said, people give out private information. If you don't want something to be online and available to whoever may have access to it, then don't put it online in the first place. People can't complain if their information is made public- they put it on a public source in the first place. Case and point- It's your own fault!
